Default The Gecko - Jim Rosenbaum

The gecko by jim rosenbaum is an incredibly well thought up, cleverly designed and put together however the price is a bit high considering you can make one for about £5.

The box is very nice and is well packaged inside. The DVD instruction is in good quality apart from the fact that it doesn't explain the use of one feature included that Andy Amyx said he would show us and that the colour changing throughout would make it difficult for a beginner to understand

Overall 7/10 upon the basis of gimmick quality but the price and the DVD is a bit of a let down

I am looking forward to Reading your replies.

I personally never liked the gecko...there are better ways to do the possible "Gecko" effects.

What have you done with it so far?

I have done tons of effects however my favourites are reatorations like getting someone to choose a card, control it to the bottom and mercury card fold and palm that to my left hand. Flip the top card and rip it into quarters and attach each one by one , vanish them and voilą perfect impromptu restoration

The gecko is just too impractical over all and not recommended for real or impromptu situations because you have to cover a lot. Get the Raven Standard.

Is the gecko really loud? I have heard that there is some noise to cover.

I spoke with our sales rep, whom has actually worked with Jim closely in developing the marketing video demo. I asked him how the gimmick is with noise and David told me that it really depends on your skill of using the gimmick.

From what I gathered, is you need to spend a lot of time learning and familiarizing yourself with the gimmick before you are prepared for live performances. At first the gimmick will be pretty noisy, but after a few weeks of getting used to it the noise pretty much dies down. It is slightly noticeable in quiet rooms. So I am told it is better used for outside stuff, stage stuff, or bar magic. However a lot of it is dependent on your misdirection as well.

Hopefully I was able to contribute some helpful information for you Colin .

great heads up on the noise levels. I have looking at this effect for a couple weeks now debating on whether or not to spend my dollars on it or not.

I might look into the raven effects since its been mentioned. ty

Is there a cheaper gimmick like this? I don't want to spend more than twenty dollars on something.

Forgive me for sounding like a parent....

Twenty dollars will not buy much when it comes to magic gimmicks and such. One of the nice things about this community is that many of the people here build their own props and gimmicks and will gladly share their knowledge when asked.

When you purchase something like 'the gecko' you are getting the device and expert instruction on how to use it. Plus you are supporting the magic community.

In the Academy in this community you will find a wealth of information about magic technique and prop development.

Default The Gecko

I built a Gecko and it works quite well. I'm still working out the placement and experimenting with different lengths and strengths of e*****c, as well as the best anchor placement for speed and silence. It is a bit noisy, so I resound that concern. The best part of the Gecko is the fact that you can utilize it for a larger variety of items than you can the Raven or the like, even larger objects.

Saying that, I do think the Raven is amazing for its speed, silence and overall stealth. If you use your imagination you can utilize it for many more applications than you think.

I will keep both around and play with them!

I would think that the idea is to make the travel route as short as possible and still get the coverage you need. I still get confused as to what device gets what label...

But I made my pull go through a guide at about where my watch would be and then anchored it further up the arm. The nice thing about that is it easy to adjust by moving the anchor point ... My catch point stays the same.

I haven't played with all that much. I also made a new gimmick...

I call it a nude pk ring but is is a flesh colored half ring - works well with a pull.

Hope this helps

PS Welcome Gordo! I haven't seen you around but hope to see more or you in the near future, buddy! Please post a intro so everyone knows who we are talking about when you are not around. Thanks!

Thanks Misjief,

I thought I posted in the New guy area but I'll doudle check.

About the pulls, I have been trying to keep them out of the sleeves and more around the waist with a guide ring somewhere along the way. The big issue for me is the length of the e*****c and the strength of it as well as the anchor point. I would still use a pull up the sleeve for coins or maybe cigarettes (see Eugene Burgers book "The Performance Of Close-Up Magic for The Work on a cig. pull!)

I actually built a little PK half ring about a year ago out of plastic but it was too small to attatch a Mag. of suficiant strenth. I toyed with the idea of using thin aluminum but......?

Anyway, thanks for the shout.

Gordo
