Docc Hilford's Burn Witch Burn
*This review is being written while listening to Alexandria * The effect: A mysterious twist on a classic effect. A borrowed $100 bill is marked with a sigil of protection. It is put in one of 3 envelopes. The other envelopes hold slips of newspaper. Three lighters are proven to operate and are randomly selected by 3 spectators. The envelopes are mixed by the spectators and handed, in order, to each spectator. You claim the sigil will protect the money through the powers of nature. The first spectator ignites his lighter and burns his envelope. The second spectator does the same. The final spectator cannot light his lighter! The remaining envelope is unharmed! When the envelope is opened, it contains the borrowed money. Whew! Finally, the sigil is erased from the $100 bill, and without the sigil to protect it the money starts burning. You quickly extinguish it and take your bows. The Arrival: It arrived in the mail promptly from my favorite magic dealer with a few other goodies that will be reviewed at a later time. I pulled out of the box a staple bound pamphlet with the big, bold title. The paper was high grade and the pamphlet didn't fall apart. Very impressive. Okay it was just printing paper stabled together, which is fine with me. I have had times when the paper from office max didn't come stapled, what a head ache. Overall: Despite this initial reaction I thumbed through the few pages of the pamphlet and was pleasantly surprised to see that every single page was full of text. Whenever I see one of these paper pamphlets, I expect to have seven pages of pictures and one page of text. NO NO not with this pamphlet. Docc takes his time explaining how he came up with Burn Witch Burn, it's influences, and other tibits of history about the Bank Night routine in general. Next he continues to DETAIL what the audience sees. He even shows you a sign that you can draw on the bill. Once you get through the effect as the audience sees it section, you get to the nitty gritty. The props required are minimum, lighters (which can be in theory any lighter), envelopes, a pencil, a borrowed bill, and three hands preferably still attached to a participant's body. He finishes the initial method of the effect and then moves into four alternative handling. Variations of the envelope hand out, lighter handling, and different presentations of the basic effect. My final thoughts: I love the effect and the presentation. It is VERY theater driven and relies heavily on the performer and how he pitches the absurd notions that a pencil marking can protect a bill. I recommend this product if you like simple method driven tricks that allow for maximum performance and entertainment time. Story: I went out and performed this piece closeup at a local Outback, had all my props ready. The waitress came to our part table to collect the bill, now previous to this moment I had been entertaining the table as an after dinner shindig. Long story short, I performed the effect with the waitress's tip. She didn't except the bill to afraid that some witchcraft will follow her. But we know better right? ![]() Product quality: 9.5/10 It would of been a perfect ten if it weren't for the cheapness of the media. Effect: 10/10 Completely up my alley and I enjoy it thoroughly. Explanation: 10/10 I can't compare this pamphlet to other pamphlets I have purchased, it is so full of information and tips. Overal: 4.5 stars out of Five. The reason I give this a four and a half is for the simple reason that if you are one of those magicians who like to do slam bam card tricks and have audiences with short attention spans, this product is not for you.
