What is everyones opinion on Gaff decks. I always use the Ghost Deck from *********** and the 4 of diamonds to move the pips. I always get great reactions from it. I was just wondering how everyone else feels about this form of magic????

Yeah it depends on your style... I use them a bit but (just like most things) they shouldn't be overused.

I keep a card wallet with me and I keep a bunch of redbacked *********** gaffs in there, along with a bunch of "voodoo" effect gaffs I made myself. Burned cards and whatnot.
I rarely ever use them but they're fun to bring out every now and then. |

As the Ghostgaff with its DVD came out I instantly had to have it! I got neat reactions from it and even build up routines of 5 tricks with one well stacked deck without any deckchanges; and those included the "famous" moving-pip-setup!
Anyway people tend to ask me "why the hack are you using these white cards". I use to say I'd "just have been to a wedding and wanted something that fits" which usually gets a laugh. But usually performing with these stacks I can't get rid of the thought that people think I was using some "special gamblers gear" - know what I mean? It's simply not the same. Today I already reached a point where I think everything differnt from a standard Bikes' 808 is a toy. All these new uber-stylish cards - i mean, fuck off... Now a few months later I'm wondering about buying the red gaff. I'm using quite a few effects with a stacked deck in my routines and ain't shy of doing a few (5+) deckswitches. Nevertheless in these programmes I use to have at least 2 points where the deck can be totally examined. So here my very advice: Due to credebility, compatibility (youll find more other gaffs for the default 808ers than e.g. for a TH's viper...) and cost issues don't buy any fancy decks at all! - Sooner or later you'll notice you can't probably perform with them and the wasted money is a pain in the ass. An expensive experience! |

I no what you are all saying. I bring out the white deck, and everyone always assumes its a "trick deck" cause they have never seen it before. I usually just keep the gaff tricks to a limit since they can not be examined afterwards

I usually let people inspect the deck before I do anything or after I do a simple trick. If I need any gaffs I'll just have them copped or cop them out if the deck was already set. Most of the reactions I get are the cards look cool, and I haven't even had a handful of people in all of my time performing with unfamiliar cards call them trick cards.
But I don't know, maybe it's just in my presentation. I do see what you mean though, they're expensive and they hurt reactions you can get. An effect can look ten times more unbelievable if the person sees it being done with a normal deck of cards. Anyhoo I'm bored so I took a pic of what I keep in my card wallet. ![]() There's 8 card slips in total. =] The redbacked card is the Eight of Hearts reveal, and the Shadow Masters/Guardian backs are the doublebackers. |

Neat collection but oh wtf - you do the "this and that" as it is done originally. I didn't like having two elements shown that are handwritten exactly the same after I got caught on it once: "hey buddy, you've got a handwriting like a printer".
Then I came along with the idea building it in in ona my routines done with an "ungaffed" deck (it has one single joker, the non-comercial one). While I'm picking out an ace, a joker and a queen of hearts (women like this one :p) I tell "as you may know in every default poker-stock thera 2 jokers". Then I do the standard routine finally handing out the Ace, Joker and displaying the last card as the queen of hearts giving it to a female person. Imo telling that little bit about the two jokers adds worlds to the credablity and performance. As an addition I always(!) perform without any sleeves which I mention several times during my whole programmes. Having another look at your picture I'm playing with the thought buying the red gaff these days

Hahah, I haven't been called out on that yet, but it's definitely something I'm always worried about. When I perform it however it's non-stop pounding until I slow it down for the climax, so they don't really know if I have 2 of this or that and their jaws always drop when that Other card seemingly comes out of nowhere.
Sweet though, thanks for sharing, hahah. Sometimes if I forget my card wallet I'll just do it with three random cards, but your setup sounds pretty badass. The red gaffs are pretty sweet by the way, but like, just an estimation but 25% of the deck is useless to me. =/ Last edited by ReaperGrimm; 02-01-2008 at 06:09 PM. |
