Exclamation My view on the current state of magic

Hello guys!

its been a long time since I was last active on any magic sites. The main reason is because i have a disability on my right hand so no matter how perfect I mastered the trick sometimes I would mess it up big style due to the fingers on my right hand being quite small. so because of that I thought it would be best for me to step back and enjoy the art as an expectator.
Plus with a disability the last thing you want to do is bring attention to it

anyways enough about me...
I stopped doing magic about 2 years ago yes seams like a long time but its not.. I had done magic for about 2 years before then and gosh I enjoyed the mates I made online and going on video chat with like 10 people and performing and giving tips to each other.

around 4 months after I stopped, I went on youtube and because many of my searches was magic all it popped up on the youtube homepage was magic tricks revealed and that really got to me, I mean I stopped doing it so I wouldnt ruin it for other people/magicians. "yes without tutorials new magicians would develop" but trust me I think like 99% of people who look up magic tricks on youtube only wants to find out how its done and they are the sort of person who would say "ayyy i know how that trick is done i saw it on youtube" and thats any magicians biggest night mare... plus if you really wanted to become a magician you wouldnt mind reading a book...

I blame the huge exposure of magic mainly on new magicians who thinks its "cool"? to expose it? i mean seriously the art of magic is the wonder... and like I have seen a few magicians in town performing and ever so often you get someone shouting how its done as they saw it on youtube...

who here thinks us magicians/magic lovers/ enthusiastic should team up "although it sounds crappy" with companies like theory11/penguin "although all they will do is then sell the trick on" to try and remove the reveals and tutorials off youtube.

The masked magician really upset me when he revealed the classic tricks.. although many said it was old and that would force magicians to come up with new stuff..

COMMON people most of the magic tricks are the same/simular just done sligtly different...

I for one am against the youtube tutorials, cant really do nothing about theory11 and penguin magic but the least we could do is try and get the tutorials removed off youtube.

Before when I used to do magic and enjoyed my time online there was so many magicians I used to like chatting too and then all of the sudden they all disapeared and I really do believe it was because of youtube's revealed section :/

who else agrees with me?
sorry if I made no sense, I really needed to show my disappointment for what the magic community has become.

Anyways I'm glad exomagic is still exomagic and not some magic warez site!

I would not let your 'handicap' prevent your from doing magic. I would learn effects that can be done in spite of your handicap.

Exposure by the 'Masked Magician' and YouTube videos may seem at first to be all bad but I really think that from this 'bad' some really good things can come out of it. First, I think it encourages a greater creativity among those performing magic. Second, it does give magic some exposure. There are so few brick and mortar magic shops these days and it is difficult to expose young people to the art.

I'm not for exposure but I don't let those videos ruin my day either.

There are lot of trick than can be done with a handicap, Wayne Dobson has way to go about it and you should maybe look him up. and never forget a Good self working trick is worth ten sleighty tricks. (surely if the spectator does it all.)

I agree with harold, the exposure is sure a menace for the industry but after all magicians sell Ideas to others.

We aren't Ready-to-go trick peoples, we must build upon what we buy or get. So creativity changes the act greatly.

The exposure force us to renew more often, How much more have I had in a walk around had the phrase: " I saw that, and know how its done, sawn on youtube." Well their goes my creativity spirit in action, I instantly twist the trick around just to amaze and mistify my spectator.

Sometimes It makes a new trick, sometimes just an alternative but my loyalty is to my spectators.

Here is my definition of magic:

- To do magic (be a magician): Entertain and mistify someone with all means possible in our knowledge, Never leave on a "I know how it's done", but with a sign of gratidute because of a fooled person.

I've read thousand of tricks and watched a lot of performances or trick dvd's, but I hardly perform straight out of the book or dvd. Always take only the idea and put in my style.

There is a book by T.G. murphy called Immagication, a wonder of a book, it got the immagication theory where you always ask what if... questions about tricks.

What if i only had one hand with an acr? what if cards where A4 size? what if my spectator could do a double lift? what if my cards where coins? what if...

So here you got some of my views, feel free to pm me for any question or thing you want

Greetings,

Owen Graven
