Any ideas about Jay Sankey's newest effect? If anything he has done a wonderful job of creating hype over it. Just what is the 'paper clip' going to do for me?

Harold,
My bet is that it is just an application of that old effect of vanishing a coin by placing a glass over it. The glass has a disk of matching paper or cloth of the same appearance as the surface the coin is sitting on. Some kids sets have two plastic or metal rings and a piece of velveteen covered card, One of the rings has a piece of the velveteen card attached to its base, When covered by a small square of card and then placed on top of the coin the coin seems to disappear. If using a paper clip the clip has to be set up so that when the clip is gimmicked, the edge of the concealing(or revealing ) piece has to be aligned with the edge of the page or money bill. This will take some considerable care. The gimmick is flat so that it can easily be attached to the camouflage. I seem to remember an old effect that slid a cardboard window down a page in a telephone book to choose a telephone number. The problem with this type of force is that the gimmick cannot be examined or even shown freely. {Not without a switch in and a switch out.} As well there is no logical reason why it should be used. Finally the very shape of Sankey's gimmick is itself suspicious because it really does not look like any normal paper clip. You can see the gimmick here: |

Jay is really good at resurrecting old ideas and modernizing them.
I would like to see him perform an effect or two using the gimmick. Then I probably will recognize the technique. Sankey is the 'king of the shuttle pass' so I wouldn't doubt a switch is involved for some of the effects.

From the videos that Jay just released about Slyder in action, you can clearly see that it is an old Theodore Annemann idea. I also seem to recall a very similar effect put out by none other than Jay Sankey, himself. I'll have to browse through my library to find the name of it.
