That happens. Just don't let it get to you. Continue to go out and create magical moments for everyone you can.

Get good with the cross dresser monte, they'll never know what hit them, lol! I say this because I assume "Her friend" isn't a real magician but just a hobbiest that learned the effect just to see how it was done, and never took the time to perform it. Or he is actually a magician and was trying to get her to reveal her secrets for his if you know what I mean
![]() I actually did a few tricks for the MILF on the court that was offering to show me her boobs for secrets, I resisted as tempting as it was, lol! Think it was my reversal routine (Topsy Turvy, A simple reverse, Revolution NO.9)

I do ponder how her mate went about gaining the knowledge of said effect without being exposed to what it's called..
how would one research something they don't know the title of...

Indeed....
a reason why it's essential to not call out the 'Titles' of the effect you are about to do

Could Be...
Heed The Advice though of not giving your 'Routines' 'Titles' so as not to leave a path one can follow down and arrive at the answer

Well, I want to share some thoughts with it too.
I think the reveal of magic is unevitable, the people just aren't as respectful as before, and got easy acces to magic tricks. (the internet, tv shows,...). It happens, and we will not evolve by getting mad at it, we need to go on.. to the extend that I have seen a lot reach, It's never about the trick you do, but about who you are, how you do it. So what do I do when this happens: Well, I'd caught them off guard by changing the plot or if that can't be done I'll be saying that this is another method than what they 'know' and surprise them with some 'extra' moves they coudn't already know. I will never leave someone without him being deeply amazed by my personality, not for the reason of showing off, but of respecting my art. And they make better clients in the future because they know you can do stuff 'out of the ordinary of tricks'. Greetings, Owen Graven

It is not about the trick-it is what you add to it that is magic. Many people have enough interest to learn a little so the probability that a person watching you knows how it is done is fairly high especially with the internet. Don't make the success of performing something hinge on whether a person in your audience is familiar with that particular way of doing it or not. Make the success about how you perform it and as was advised by Mr. Graven, learn and devise other methods to accomplish the same thing so you have an emergency bag of tricks at the ready if you must suddenly take a different route. The magic isn't in the mechanics-it is in enchanting your audience with what you bring to the performance with your personality and mental agility. Your genius and creativity are your tools beyond the mechanics of how a particular illusion is done. Practice recovery from disaster as much as you practice any particular trick. Get the reaction you want by playing with their mind, their expectations. Someone thinks they know what you are going to do? Surprise them. Make them laugh and you'll transform disappointment into delight. You don't have to learn every single way to do a trick-but have a charming and engaging way to recover if something goes wrong. Then it wont matter if your audience is a 5 year old child or a room full of professional magicians. You'll never have to walk away again or get shot down by someone badgering/heckling you.
You entertained 14 people-and 1 not so much? I'd say thats pretty darn good. Keep it up. |

Great post Owen. Everyone is bound to run into someone who's familiar with a trick or catches your technique/sees you mess up. The best thing to do is just keep going. The guy who walks away once they've failed is just an average quitter. The one who continues to perform through improvisation is a true magician.

The most solid way around this, is to change your routine to fit you. I know it sounds stupid, it's two card monte right? How else could it be presented?
Well, that's up to you. 99% of the time, when people say they've seen it before, just means they've seen that presentation before. That script is familiar to them, and you're not breaking the mold enough for them to look at it like it's a completely different effect. You can use this same idea to fool magicians. You don't need to create a new sleight to fool a magician, just make it seem like it's a new routine, with patter they've never heard, and motivated actions etc etc. They'll look at it with spectators eyes. Anyway, just my 2 cents |
