Kloeine, i have just finished watching the video. I suppose since nothingis really being revealed i can post here how it's done. However once you have been registered for 7 days and have at least 10 posts you will gain access to the level one academy which has many more tricks.

The trick uses mathematic principles. The blocks are cut in such a way that with a little rearranging they will retain the same area. I have a book somewhere which teaches magic tricks using geometric and mathematic principles, i will have a look for it.

Default Dissection Puzzle

This effect is based upon a very old class of puzzle wherin when the tiles are rearranged there appears to be a section missing.

This particular effect is a slight variation in that when first shown there are 9 pieces present however for the initial display of puzzle solving
Hidden Block (you must be registered and have 10 posts):
You do not have sufficient rights to see the hidden data contained here.
. In your pocket are two pieces that together add up to the piece removed.

The rest of the effect is simply rearranging the tiles to form what appears to be the original rectangle. However the addition of the small piece results in a rectangle that is smaller than the very initial display. However when you add the second larger piece and rearrange you are back to the very initial display and can then place the frame around the tile grouping.

This gives the impression that the rectangle has on the one hand grown and yet on the other has stayed the same.

The video on Youtube cuts at the point where the magician removes the first (3 unit piece) but I suspect that he simply laps the piece or sweeps it backwards to drop on the floor.

The layout of the tiles is shown in the attached image. Note: The textured tile is duplicated and one of these is cut into 1 and 2 units. A unit is a square. The whole puzzle is 5.5 by 7 units in dimensions. Note carefully where the slant line cuts.

Each of the tile shapes needs to be cut out separately and then temporarily glued onto whatever medium you wish to make the puzzle out of. This will allow you to cut each piece precisely without losing saw or cutting kerf material.

This is my analysis after having googled for information on this class of puzzles. I have not seen or handled the puzzle itself. The diagram I have included was constructed in a graphics program after much experimentation to work out the exact placement of the cuts.

Kloenie-

I couldn't give you the info on which piece to palm and the like because I could NOT find that particular puzzle template. I badly wanted to duplicate it and came up short. That said I am really surprised and happy that Aussie Jeff AKA Retired found it for us. I don't know how 'The Great One' not only figured it out but provided a template for it. Holy Cow!

Make sure you hit the "Thank You" button for him!

Hi all;

Does anyone know of any video postings where I can see this being performed? I love this visually stimulating kind of magic, which is also educational in nature!

Thanks

Default Further information:

The 3 unit piece has a small magnet underneath the plastic surface coating. This allows one to use various methods to ditch the 3 unit piece. ie. You could us an M5 magnet or similar to remove the piece.. or you could palm it and ditch it on the surface of a back pocket containing a magnet....or you use a simple magnet pull to whisk it away ala the Raven. If you are seated you could simply lap the piece.....or if you have a magnetic ring on the middle finger you can simply allow the ring to help you palm it and then ditch it anywhere when an approprite time occurs.

On youtube you can see Lu Chen do the effect but because he is seated and not surrounded and his ring is not centered on his middle finger he obviously laps the piece. Search for Miraculous Block (Never Changes).

Hope this helps. ( By the way Lu Chen has had a custom white surround made to make the effect look bigger for TV.)

As I remember, my puzzle has the hidden magnet.

This is a great effect to show math/science students. I have a whole routine around Curry's Paradox. I have attached a puzzle that I give out to students.
