One of the simplest is using a laser to light the match. It is not the least expensive way but the cleanest method.

Safety matches usually consist of potassium chlorate and red phosphorus. By separating the strong oxidizer (potassium chlorate) from the reducer (phosphorus) the matches are prevented from igniting spontaneously. Unlike the safety matches, strike-anywhere matches are made with oxidizer and reducer together in the match head so that only friction or elevated temperature is required to ignite them.

There are a few chemicals that will cause a violent reaction with potassium chlorate. This would create a dangerous situation- I would reconsider playing with matches in the way. Leave pyrotechnics to the pros. Be safe in your magic.

Default Self lighting match...

I agree with Haroldross, sometimes it's best left to the experts.

That said, there is an effect on the market called Lit, which is basically a card to mathbook effect. BUT...within the DVD there is a method explained wherin you have someone hold a book of matches above their head and after some intense Mind control and consentration you cause the book of matches to burst into flames.

I have used this effect several times, so, if you are still bent on performing something like this I would recommend that trick as a resourse. You will need to buy a couple of chemicals and use EXTREME CAUTION!!! but it is within the scope of the reasonable conjurer (Not recommended for anyone under age)

There's nothing quite like causing a matchbook to burst into flames from twenty feet away with what appears to be nothing but your mind!

As always, be serious when you play with this stuff! It IS pyrotechnics after all.

Carrie! Carrie! Plug it up! Plug it up! Carrie! (I love Steven King!)

You could really FREAK some people out with that one... Get Tar'd & Feather'd by angry villagers with pitchforks! You know the typical Friday night gone out of control! LOL!

I am going to have to look that one up, it sounds hilarious!

instead of the chemical route, how about an electric gimmick such as this...

I'll be debuting my self-igniting matchbook trick in my show next week. I call it my 'Thousand Dollar Trick' in honor of the management at Harrahs that said I would be fined $1000 if I lit a match during my show. Apparently the meeting room was not a smoking room!

Haha...$1000 seems a bit much, but never the less it makes for a very cool sounding name for your trick. Hope your show goes well!

Haha! Nice quote Misjief! I also recommend to use pyro very carefully and be prepared for any situation that might happen. One can never be too careful.
