I have tried Daryl's and Houchin's approach to this effect but have had best results with a gimmick described in an old magazine series. It consists of a playing card folded into thirds with a small tear in one end. I wind the double length thread onto the card and finish with the balled up section behind the card and then the next two turns are wound on and then the end is pulled tight into the tear.
With this set up I then unwind the the thread secreting the balled up section between the thumb and forefinger and then accidently !! drop the card which unwinds the rest of the thread as it falls to the ground. Now you are set to perform the effect. To wind the thread neatly I use a little gadget made from two 1 inch lengths of plastic tubing pushed onto a small "U" shaped piece of fencing wire. With this I can wind the thread in the normal figure eight loops that ensure a clean unravelling at the conclusion of the effect. The best thread I have found is a cheap 6 ply craft thread that comes in a pack of multi colored skeins at a local $2 shop. It is bright and reasonably thick and therefore easily visible up to about 12 feet away. ( I am of course referring to only one of the six plies!!) |

Hi Ya!
I have never seen this effect... In fact I would probably have ignore it but it was written by YOU and you haven't steered me wrong yet! So where would look this up trick up? and what exactly is the effect? Here is description I found on the net... but I still don't quite get it. The performer takes a spool of thread, unravels about a foot of it, and then breaks it off, putting the spool down. Performer proceeds to break the thread into 6 or 7 clearly broken & different pieces, then holding one piece in one hand, the other pieces are rolled up into a ball and 'squashed' onto the piece from the other hand. When this is unravelled it is seen to be completely restored to it's original length. a better description... Facts and Stuffs: Hindu Gypsy Thread here is a vid (or two).. Hindu Gypsy Thread Revealed If I understand this correctly the first part with the playing card is the gimmick for the initial presentation - It is what I bring to the table with the spectators... and the second piece the 'U' is what I use to create the ball used in the method. Right? As long as we are on the subject can you tell me how he does the thread from the eye? I suspect he uses your ball trick and hides it behind the eyelid. Ouch! then he sucks in the piece from his mouth as he draws the other from his eye. - How I do? *** It sounds to me like you are using some heat shrink and applying it to some fairly thick wire (think coat hanger!) bent into a 'U' to make the gimmick; then you run your string onto it. Sounds like a great idea for weighted gravity pulls and the like.... This thing is pretty small right? what is the distance between the ends - the width of the 'mouth' - just to give us an idea? half an inch? *** Think Rubber Roach on a string! Not 'magic' per say but I bet I get a lot of screams with it. -misj- PS there are two vid just the second one didn't embed and I don't know how to make it do so - click the link! |

Have a look at this.
Thread from Eye - Magic Trick - Learn Magic for Free - Blifaloo.com I personally won’t muck around with my eyes. Your query re the wire gimmick is correct except that I had on hand some hard plastc tubing from an old multimeter probe. I simply cut it to about an inch long (two pieces) and glued them on to the wire. ( I have now made a newer simpler version using the same wire and a short length of flexible drip irrigation tubing. Here is a photo of the gimmick and how it is used. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4019/...f09af03f_b.jpg The figure 8 arrangement of the thread is folded over to form a loop, then twisted to form a smaller figure 8 and then rolled into a ball. I then wet it with a little spit to keep it together Hindu Gypsy Thread Revealed |

Retired-
I too will not do the eye thing because I don't want anymore challenges in my life (being blind in one eye qualifies!) nor do I want someone mimicking me and damaging themselves. I was simply curious... Which as you quietly and politely pointed out is dangerous. *** Thank you for the info... I find it ever so funny to be on the other side to the equation - People were asking about my gimmicks and I'd respond (often thinking they were rather thick headed and the answers obvious). They are obvious IF you have the experience and pain of making the silly thing. You almost always learn far more then you think when you design your own works! Oh! In seeing your pictures I was reminded of a similar gimmick I made in order to make "money paws" for my cup and balls. Same idea only a little bigger perhaps! They look very nice - especailly made of think cord or leather! Monkey's Fist -misj- |

Did you use a "Monkey's Paw" in a Chop Cup routine? I can see how this could be done by including a ball bearing inside the knot.

Yeah exactly!
Only I use foil and some iron ferrite. Same Idea! A ball bearing might be too heavy - with the ferrite I can play with the weight to get the best balance with the magnet as far as when to hold and when to fall. -misj- |

Hi there,
I saw this done with UV thread. Coupled with the right music playing in the background - very powerful effect. When I saw the UV thread at nearly $200 for 100 yrds, I thought there must be a better way - try looking up Moon Glow as a source. Apparently, the natural color is brightest under UV. White apparently is a bit greener. If I were to do this routine, I'd use the UV gimmick. So much nicer. I've ordered some of the tread, at $8.99 for 500yds. THe ferrite load in the monkey paw is clever. Tnx Misjief Doug |

Hi-
Dollar Tree in the USA has a secret agent invisible message kit that contains a "UV pen" and light for a buck! Works well on the cheap! I bought a couple of them - I haven't really put any thought in to how to use them yet! -misj- |
