Agreed with Cornman, terrible conflict with Segachtek. some ideas ARE randomly plucked out of the air. We have to live with that, right? Wynns are simplistic, almost babyish. The Four Horsemen evokes culture, understanding and MEANING in a deck rather than just a fancy design. Let's face it, what significance do we share? A website chased down by law enforcement agencies and having to go legal; that's not inspiring, not something you can stick on a card. We have no significance other than our shared history and love of magic

But with the four horsemen, we see something that, though it has no true link, looks bloody good! Stick the latin suits on the back with the horsemen as the court cards, tasty Tragic Royalty colours, that's what we should go for.

By the way, could we change Black-Clubs-Famine to Green-Clubs-Famine and Green-Spades-Death to Black-Spades Death please? Famine is a terror that affects the living, not the dead. Living=green? ANy ideas?

Who are we? If you think that what defines us here at Exo is the common bond of loosing access to downloads because of the government, then you miss everything that we are. I merely suggested thinking about something with meaning rather than something random. A deck that we will find in a drawer 50 years from now that will remind us of what we here in Exomagic were here for. Not something that we will see and just think "that was kinda cool." If the group wants the 4 horsemen theme, then that is what it will be, I only pose an idea to the masses that we figure out something of a deeper personal meaning to us.

Also, regarding the idea of simple vs complex, I think you took from my comments the wrong idea of what I meant. I look at the back of a Bike. That is simple. Yes, it is a complicated fabric of design, but it is still simple. I am just trying to keep us from taking off on a spree and ending up with something to the effect of a pale green 3D horse on the back of our card or a jumble of graffiti. Simple was referring to taking one basic idea and going with it, keeping it classy and professional. Heck, my favorite cards of all are Ghosts/Black Ghosts. Same old bike design on the back, just a new take at how the design makes you feel by the color. Simple, classy, straight forward, professional. Wynns are very much an extreme when it comes to cutting out the crap, and I didn't mean to suggest we follow that path. We just need to make sure that whatever we pick makes the most stunning card for ALL of us, from magician to XCMer, from collector to poker player. Lets just make sure that no cheesie and childish art makes its statement on our card.

Willthong~ What about Guardians? Centurions? When I look at those cards, I don't think "This reminds me of Theory 11!", I think "Wow, those are some fine looking cards" I've gotten compliments from all ages on how the cards look, everyone seems drawn to them. If we play our cards right (no pun intended), we could do the same with the four horsemen theme.

Now, this is not to say that we are definitely using the 4HM theme. If you have a suggestion of something that could be used as a theme that represents ExoM, by all means, post it. The hard part is finding a tangible thing that we all share.

Segachtek~I agree, I don't think anyone wants fully 3D custom backs. Maybe as detailed as T11's deck, but no more than that. I've almost gotten all the details worked out on my card back, and it's by no means going to be a beautifully rendered image. I was thinking of a sketchish, grungish look. You'll see soon.

RANDOM IDEA: Maybe a possible design could be two hands shaking hands, showing how we share and help each other here? Any thoughts?

Cool idea. Not sure how we would make it work, but I like the thinking behind it. Far more along the lines of who we are.

Segachtek: I'm sorry about the card back complexity, I misunderstood. I feel that you're right about the Bicycle deck being good. Perhaps rather than one bike rider we can have 4 horsemen? (I know I'm supporting the 4H a lot...it's because I think it's great!) We then keep the complex simplicity of the bikes with the great imagery of 4H...just an idea.
Also, about the "deeper personal meaning," I find that if somebody WERE to look in a drawer in 50 years time, I'd rather them say "that is so awesome" than "that WAS so cool." Thousands of years from when it was conceived, we still say great things about Greek mythology, the sheer imagination and skill involved in its creation. The last thing I want them to say is "That was made by ExoMagic trying to promote their non-existent "deeper meaning." Weren't they stupid? They're just reformed pirates!" It's WAY more important to HIT HARD rather than have meaning. Then, the REAL card worker can get some usage!

Cornman: I agree; perhaps full 3D is a bit overdoing it. I think you've misunderstood me about the symbolism; I'm trying to say that there is NO symbolism we can put there without making it look corny (no offence). I agree that we need to have something that looks cool despite meaning nothing! Only THEN can it be effective.

I think Willthong's got it, a killer design is more important than a deeper meaning. Not to say that a deeper meaning is stupid, but a little less important. To make an example of another card that focuses more on design than meaning: Tally-ho Fan and circle back.

I'm going to be gone this weekend, but I plan (read: Hope!) to finish the design. Keep the ideas flowing, guys! (and possibly gals, but that doesn't seem to be the case on this forums...)
