Argh! I've been watching some shows on the web, and boy... They suck. Hard.
First off, the "magicians" get a DAY to practice before going on the streets. That's barely enough time to learn a pinkie break, let alone an entire trick. Second, the "magicians" aren't interested in the art. AT ALL. One guy, Ant, actually said "People may say 'you're evil, you're bad', but they have to remember that this is a CONTEST. If someone hangs a hundred thousand dollars in front of your face, you're gonna go for it." So we know he's just interested in the money. One guy I do like is (I think) Hal. He did this one trick with a newspaper that was very good. So anyone else seen it, and have thoughts?

The show sucks hard ass. No passion for the art of magic and terrible performers. When that guy did Interlaced, I almost started crying at how stupid he performed it. And how are people expected to learn tricks in a day? It took me weeks just to properly control a card to the top. They really don't give a damn at how they make magaicians look and if they really flash out on the streets. -_-

I agree, except for Hal and the girl with the CD manipulator as a teacher. They both did their tricks very well.
But yeah. I think I'm going to keep watching though. At the rate the show is at now, I'll have learned at least four tricks by the end!

With magic's current state... I'd be happy if it went underground now... at this very moment. I don't care If I couldn't get new material anymore. I just want to get those freaking LMT and youtube pieces of BS to stop trying to be magicians. They can't even impress the only spectators they perform to in person(besides their also magician wannabe friends) . (yes that's their webcams I'm talking about).

I forced myself to watch the first episode of this and these are my observations just from watching one episode.
1. This show is not about magic. Like most "reality" shows the theme is only a background to display contrived, scripted pseudo-celebrity drama. This show is no different.... they could be learning to cook, sing, dance, rock climb, tie their shoes.... believe me, to the producers it doesn't matter. 2. There is very little exposure in the show (at least the episode i saw) there are effects that aren't preformed very well, but it seems like they have gone out of their way to keep exposure to a bare minimum... i would guess E is pushing for that. 3. Women are good at magic and can preform it with different context and characters then men can. It's a shame that there aren't more women in the art. 4. I don't know how the show comes across to a layperson, but as far as magicians go, I don't think the show is a total wash. Aside from learning effects there is a lot that can be learned about presentation and preforming. These are people who already know how to perform (Indeed they are performing during the whole show) and are learning magic effects for the "first" time. If i had to choose a Performer to teach magic or a Magician to teach to preform I would pick the Performer any day of the week. P.S. I'm glad i don't have a TV -J1P |
