Here we go. The new contest I hope will draw more people than the last.

Card Manipulation Magic Contest

We want to see from you all a single, uncut series of card manipulations. We are not looking for XCM or flourishing here (although it may help increase the overall impressiveness of your video), but we are looking for magic that requires no patter. Patter is not against the rules, but we just want to see with our eyes a series of impossible events. Color changes, transpositions, ACR, etc. We want a beautiful, smooth, magical routine.

Prize - I still have my Massa playing cards stashed in my room, so I'll toss in a deck of those, a deck of Dan and Dave's Smoke playing cards (Now discontinued) and a deck of Ghost playing cards from ***********. This is a nice little haul for someone.

$1,000 Jackpot offered to the winner. (FYI - There must be 15 valid entries from others for the jackpot to take effect).

Rules:
Only one video per person! Once a video is posted, it is permanent! So make sure you have posted what you want, if not, post it in the Academy and have some of us critique it for finalization.

Be unique! You must place the following random object in your video (without a cut) to ensure that this video was not made prior to this contest. The random object of the day is "a coffee cup". If you do not have a coffee cup write on a piece of paper your username, date, and ExoMagic.Com.

Users must have a minimum of 10 posts before they can participate. Users with less then 10 posts may submit their videos, but they will not be in the pool for any prizes.

Contest is open now. Ends March 7th at 9pm Eastern.
Judging will take place on March 7th evening and be completed and posted by 12:00 EST with results.

All shipping charges will be covered by the staff themselves. If the winner does not respond to email/private message by March 16th 2009 they void their right to a prize.

// Grading Rubric //

Quote:

Original - 20pts
Smooth - 20pts
Visual - 20pts
Smart - 20pts
Captivating - 20pts
Total - 100pts

Original - The routine must be unique. You can't just take someone's handling of a routine and copy it. You can use tricks, you can use people's handling, but make it your own at the same time. Be Creative!

Smooth - Fluid, well practiced. It can't look like you learned this today. Flashes will count against this. Dropped cards will count against this. We aren't being tyrants about this, but the less you mess up and the smoother you are, the higher your score is going to be.

Visual - You must be able to grab our attention. It must look like magic.

Smart - The routine must have a direction. You can't just jump between unrelated tricks.

Captivating - You must make something that people want to watch. We need to feel like we don't want to stop watching as we view your performance.

Alex and I will complete this rubric for each video submitted and average our scores. Scores will not be made public, but each participant will be given their individual score and personal feedback from Alex and me.

Heh, I'm glad that the deadline is in March, this gives people some time to practice. I've already worked out the skeleton of my routine; I'm not going to participate in the contest (As in, if I happen to win, prizes would go to runner up), but I'm certainly gonna try to strut my stuff! Expect to see something from me, and I expect to see something from all of you!

Very nice, Cardini. Some critiques, if you care to take them. First, blurry camera. Was that intentional? It seems like it could be a subtle-ish cover for some of the moves. If it wasn't intentional, I hope you redo to make your routine more viewable. If it was, I vote extra points for being creative on covering moves.

Only other things was a few breaks in the smoothness of the routine, but that happens to the best of us. Good video and good luck!

Well, I filmed my entry the past weekend. Unfortunately, I learned after the filming that our video camera is having issues with actually recording the film to the tape, so I'm going to have to redo it on my laptop's camera. Expect some crappy quality video soon-ish!

I got 2 more questions.. can there be music over the video.. like it would still be uncut... and does a dupe count as a gimmick... cuz I have 2 routines set up in case I can't use dupes...

As for dupes, do you mean like an deck switch, or an extra card? I would assume that gimmicks start at any type of gaff cards. My personal view is that any extra cards that have been simply taken out of another normal deck is not a gimmick.

Lyle, just want to make sure, the glare in my video is pretty bad unless it's in black and white, is it alright if I just do that?
