Exo graciously puts as prize for the current Exomagic.com contest the “The infamous DVD that landed ExoMagic in the hands of the FBI”. In other words, the prize to this contest is the “Holy Grail” which is a torn and restored card effect DVD.

To get a chance to win this pecular piece of history you will have to prove yourself! First off, I believe it is important for this contest to include a certain creative component. Second, I wish that this creative component embeds itself in the constitution of a magic innovation or novelity. Thus said, several other ideas which can be used in the future have been thought of in a short brainstorm process. For this contest however I give to you the ORIGINAL PATTER/STORY CONTEST. The contest can consist in the refurbishing or totally new patter based on a current commercially available trick/handling. For example, a totally new way to introduce the ambitious card routine. Yes, you can also use a routine that you tweaked up, or invented. Do consider however what will be judged is not the handling or efficiency, even though it is implicit to the coherence of the trick, but mainly the storyline of the trick. You may film yourself or simply transcript your patter in text in the forums.

The criterion to determine the winner are based on the following factors :
A) Coherence : The story/patter must make sense with the handling/trick. The script must also be comprehensible an audience.
B) Originality : It includes a new twist, develops something that was never thought of…. Or totally transforms a routine by changing the perspective. (For example : Daniel Garcia’s way of explaining the ambitious card as “melting to the top”)
C) Adaptability : The possibility for the patter to adapt to different circumstances.
D) Entertainment : Does it captivate your audience? Can it make it gasp, shout, swear, scream, look intensively in your eyes, mess with their minds. Also, the patter must keep the attention of the audience! If the patter is too dense or if it elongates the trick too much it’s no good!
E) Efficiency : Does the patter cover the handling well? This is linked to coherence but it is different. What I mean is that the patter should be able to be in some measure misdirection also, if the trick actually needs any. If the misdirection provided by the patter is subtile and provides at the same time entertainement and fluidity, bingo!

The winner will receive the prize free of shipping charge.

On-the-side : Since the prize is a torn and restored effect, it could be neat to provide original patter to such a routine!
The winner of this contest if the idea is deemed of sufficient quality, Exomagic inc. proposes the publication in the form of video or ebook of the original material in its shops, of course, with the author’s approval and with renumerations per copy sold. Details to be discussed if this occurs.
If the material which contestants provide is of high quality it could also be considered to create a package ebook or mini-magazine containing the various contributions.
If you so desire Exo can also sign the plastic of this DVD to make it a vintage eternal memento.

Okay, here's some somewhat original patter. It only works if they say something. The story is as follows...

One day I was playing with some pretty custom cards (black tally-hos, i think... Fan back probably) and someone asked me to do a trick. And then afterwards someone said "Are those fake cards?" and I responded with "Oh my god! You can see them too!?!?! ... I'm getting good..." It made me laugh and they laughed too. The only problem is you have to work off what they say. But ever since then, I have realized people say things like this a lot so it's pretty easy and predictable. I dunno if it's as funny as I think it is, but I enjoy it.

You pull out the two coins and say " A month ago i was helping my father clean out his attic he had some old coins one was copper and one was silver but these where the only two of their kind so i asked if i could take them and he said its fine."
Show the coins front and back
"I was doing some coin tricks with these two i place one the silver in my hand ( accually placing it in the spectators hand ) And and copper one out of my hand."
"Now Back in the 1500's copper and silver expecially was very rare the wizards of the time believed silver was special. No one knows how or why but when the silver is placed in the hand and the copper out you rub the copper and the copper melts to the silver and it changes" Look in you Hand"
"So thats why wizards though silver and copper where special."

an ambitious card routine talking about Hercules and how he defeated gods and demons. I would say this make sense and it is good for young kids to develop a sense of good and bad. Just my take on the acr routine. Like when the card rises to the top u talk about Hercule's vanishing or making a triumphant return over his problems. or talk about when the gods wanted to talk to him they magically brought him to mt.Olympus.

I tell 2 people they're psychologically connected.
I ask one to pick a card, and not to show it to me or the second person.
I have them replace the card and then I shuffle.
I tell the first person to send the thought of the card to the other person.
I say all right after a moment, then begin to spread through the cards.
The second spectator touches any card, and can change their mind as many times as they wish.
I square up the packet of spread cards with their selection from the middle at the bottom, and display the first person's selection.

I've been using this patter and experimenting with it for a while [having them both see the card, having only one see the card, different forces, etc.] and I've found the best reaction comes from when the second spectator doesn't know the card. Every single time I've found them going back and forth in disbelief, and it's nice seeing a layman trying to prove the magic to the other layman, haha. "Was that your card?" "Yeah!" "Are you lying?!"

A TNR patter...

Take out your card, have someone sign it on the face. Start by folding the card into fourths. Once card is in fourths, explain that "World war 1 is sometimes referred to as a giant family feud. This is because in England, George the fifth [rip off the first corner now], was king. he was a related by marriage to Kaiser Wilhelm II, [rip off second corner] who controlled Germany. There was also Tsar Nicholas III [rip of third corner], who controlled Russia, in the family. They all were Queen Victoria's [display last corner] grandchildren.
Now, as some people know, Russia and Germany were one opposite sides of the war [pause a moment to connect the proper corners to the last corner's torn sides]. Later, as if that wasn't enough, England joined the war, allied with Russia, going against Germany [Connect the last corner]."
*Pause, let the effect sink in*
"Now, some of you may be thinking, 'but that's only 3 countries in the war, weren't there more?', and you'd be absolutely right. There were a number of other countries in the war. [place the restored card back in the deck, shuffle a bit, place deck in a paper bag]. Everyone was affected by the Great war [shake the bag around], but it hurt the three original countries most. [Pull out a knife, stab through the bag, and show that you've stabbed through the restored card]"

For the "Adults-only Illusion; aka the TNR Penis.", created by Mi5terScratch.

Walk up to someone, preferably one whom you are very friendly with. Say:
"You know what I hate? When you see someone that is SO FREAKING HOT that when you start to masturbate (Whip out your "gimmick" now), you go so fast that suddenly..." (Now's when the actual effect happens, the ripping off of the penis). No matter what their reaction is (shock, disgust, screaming), say calmly "I know, seriously! But, you know, (Don't look at them while you say this part, put the gimmick back in your zipper and focus on your crotch, as if what's happening isn't all that important), whatever. It happens, am I right?" (Say that last line with a COMPLETELY straight face, as if you were confirming that it was 10.30 in the morning.) Now you can just walk away.

I want to use this patter SO badly, but I don't have many people to show that kind of trick to. And the ones that I do have live in either Norway, Ireland, Spain, or Alaska.

here is my patter,mine is also on a torn and restored card,i personally think that if you make a story that people can relate to it gets them connected to the trick,thus enjoying it more!!

introduce your self to the spectator and explane your a magician,how a few tricks before you perform this so that there are begging for more!nowhere the patter for the holy grail:

"have you ever throw something away or torn something up,mabye a reciept or a box,and then a week or so later you need it?well i have had that problem,but now i know how to take care of it,i will demonstrate with this deck of cards"

remove the cards from your pocket,gt a spectator to "select any card" and sign thier name across the face.take the deck and place it into your pocket and take thier signed card back from them.

"this happened to me a few days ago,i brought a new (an product,in this explanation im using a phone) phone.i ripped up the reciept because i was sure the phone wouldnt break,i was wrong!your card is going to symbolive the reciept"

now rip thier signed card into 4 pieces,wait for the gasp,stare into everyones eyes and grin.

"i took the phone back to the shop ,but they woudnt give me a refund, i showed them the 4 pieces of the reciept but they said it need to be in one peice,so i showed them a piece of it"

make sure you deliever the line above well,if you do you will get a laugh.

"luckily im a magician,so all i have to do if touch the peice toghether and they started to restore"

restore their card piece by peice and watch thier jawdrop!

"so i handed them the full receipt and i got my money back!"

and wait for the applause!a great one liner i use after this is:

"i became a magician to find out how i do it!"

my second patter is again,a torn and restored card using the holy grial gimmick.its called "a torn heart"

preparation:make your gimmick holy grail card and draw a heart in the centre of the back of it.also put a scwigle on the face so it looks like a signature.

perfornance:so you have introducted yourself to the spectators ,show them some tricks,you now do to a women in the group and say

"excuse me,would you mind helping out with this trick?"

most of the time they will reply"no,not at all"

remove the cards from the box and force them the duplicate card to your gimmick,ask them to signed there name on the face in the middle of the card and then you take thier card back and you draw a heart on the back,try and make this match the one you drew on the holy grail card before,now do a top change with there card so you have the gimmmick card in your hand.the misdirection for this is you say:

"so this is you signature"

say this as you perform the top change,this is the perfect cover,so now you have the holy grail card in you right/left hand and the deck in your right,please the deck into your pocket and show them the card,now go onto the plot:

you say"i dated this girl a few months ago,we hade a great relationship ,we did everything together,but one night i chaught here with another guy,my heart was broken torn apart"


now tear up the holy grail card into four pieces.you should get a "arr" from the audience.try and look said at this point.

"but then i found you,and my heart repaired itself"

now look at the women,she will blush,and you will get a laught from the audience,nowrestore the card and then get down on one knee and say to the women

"will you marry me"


as you get down do another top change so you have thier signed card now and make a hole in it and put it on her finger and say:

"it fits"

you will get a HUGE round of applause and alot of laughs!enjoy!thanks you.

Well, here it goes, in all its detailed glory. I had shared this presentation before on E (back before that turned totally stupid), and I got a good response from it. It is to this day how I perform Invisible Deck. I feel its a very strong way to present it:


The Setup


1 invisible deck (DOH!)
1 normal deck of the same color


(While not a necessity, this routine is designed with the female spectator in mind. While guys react big to it, I ve noticed that this particular approach creates a stronger emotional response when being performed to a female spectator in a one on one setting).


And lastly…
This presentation requires a BIG amount of showmanship and acting to be truly effective. Here we go…


Setting, Presentation and Patter:


(While casually talking with your target spectator, act as if your having a random and overwhelming feeling of d?j? vu)


Magician: “oh man” (looking around with a puzzled look on your face). “Wow”

Spectator: “what’s wrong”?


Magician: “I just had a REALLY weird feeling of d?j? vu just now. Like I ve been here before. Its really overwhelming for some reason”


Spectator: “ I get that sometimes too. Its really weird isn’t it”? (they usually say something along those lines).


Magician: “it really is. It really feels like this has all happened before. I tell you what. Do you want to try and test it”?


Spectator: “um..Ok..But how”?


Magician: “well, I have an idea”
(At this point, get your NORMAL deck from your pocket).


Magician: I’m going to spread through this deck of cards, and im going to make a prediction.
(At the point, angle your cards a bit back and up, so that your spectator can see that you’re spreading the cards, but so that they CAN’T see the face of the cards).


Magician:” ok..i need to concentrate for a second”. (close your eyes, and SLOWLY spread through the cards, making sure to keep the deck angled up out of the spectators line of vision)


Magician: “I think I ve got something. (at this point, appear doubtful, and turn over 1 card, but keep them angled to keep your prediction hidden!)


Magician: (put the cards in your pocket) “ I ll put these away for a second””.


Magician: take my hands, and close your eyes….concentrate…concentrate on one card, but don’t say it out loud”. (BUILD THIS PART UP!! CLOSE YOUR EYES WITH THE SPECTATOR AND CONCENTRATE WITH THEM)
(At this point, SLIGHTLY jerk back as if you felt something, or as if you heard your spectators thought. Look at them in amazement).


Magician: “ I think I got something”..(Continue appearing confused).


Magician: “now, if this was something that happened before, this could in theory prove it….what was the card you were thinking of”?


Spectator: **names card**


Magician: APPEAR SHOCKED! DON’T SAY A WORD. Go into your pocket, and get your Invisible Deck.


Magician:” you saw me turn over one card earlier. You saw me put the deck in my pocket, and you ve been holding my hands the entire time. But look…….”


Magician:”….the only card turned over in the deck….(and you know the rest [ ) (KEEP APPEARING AMAZED YOURSELF!!)


Now brace yourself for an insane reaction!

I have performed this effect many times now, but what I really like about this particular presentation is that it in no way feels like a card trick. It’s a miracle in the eyes of your spectator, especially since they WATCHED YOU turn over one card and put the deck away!
If you build up this effect, and give it the showmanship it deserves, I guarantee it will not fail to get you a big reaction.

Performance
The party is almost over. You have blown away people with your last effect. Everyone is amazed by your performance. While they are giving their comments, One of them asks you to levitate (which is a heckler). You are in a situation like O_O . The whole crowd is hooting,"Levitate, Levitate, Levitate". You say to the crowd "I'm not sure that i will be able to do this, but let me try". You move a little away from the audience and face the opposite side. You take your time, do a little gestures the the audience see you levitate a little. Most of the people are O_O (LOL). (The one who asked you to levitate says) "Hey Everyone, do you think that this guy levitated", they will say "Yeah". He will ask them "You want to do that too" They will reply "F@!KING YEAH!". He describes the audience that you just did a "Balducci levitation". And your A%$ will be busted. But no you have other plans. You bet the heckler that your can levitate your both feet off the ground. The heckler don't believes it and accepts the bet. You tell them that there is no wiring or support around here which will help you to achieve your goal. You are ready for your attempt,But this time you convince the audience by standing at a 9'0 Clock position. Again you take your time and after sometime the audience see you levitate a little higher than before. But the heckler slams on the ground before you put your feet down. He sees your foot outside the shoe. Now your reputation is wasted again in front of the audience. The heckler is convinced that you cant levitate. The heckler says "If you really levitate RIGHT NOW, I will give you Double money of the bet" (he can make it triple too) (It is a possibility that this time the people from the crowd also start betting you) . This is the only chance you get your reputation back. You accept the challenge. But this time you stand right in front of the spectators, facing them. No one thinks that you will be able to do it this time. You take your time and after a while the audience sees you levitate with your both feet of the ground. The heckler can't believe his eyes. The crowd goes screaming and your got you reputation and the money. If you are filming this. Then the next scene you shoot that the heckler and you are shaking hands and counting the money (LOL, Surprised?)

Explanation
I think this routine is a weapon of a street performer. You can do this weather you are in a party or street or home. But the spectators should not be too much that they surround 360 degree. The main weapon of your routine is "The Heckler". The are 2 ways to get this routine done. 1st is to use a stooge. Well he has to do nothing but to do acting. The people can never get to know this that he is a stooge, ITS IMPOSSIBLE. Because he isn't helping the performer in anyways instead he is trying to bust him. And the 2nd way is without using a stooge. This can me achieved rarely because first you are gonna do the Balducci levitation and i think most of the people already know this. You set you stooge too before the performance. Do your effects and if they are impressed from your work, someone of them will ask you to levitate (It happens most of the time). Then you got your victim. Now you will use him instead of a stooge. First you will do the balducci levitation. As i think most of the people know this they will come in and try to destroy your reputation. Then you get ready for the king rising levitation. You follow the same steps as teachd in the King rising levitation DVD from *********** (taking off the jacket and ........). And remember you need the jacket before you start the performance at very early. This time the heckler (or hecklers) will bet you to really levitate. you accept it. You get ready and then you do the king rising levitation. Most often it will happen that the heckler will may be bend down or try to see that you are really levitating or you are on your feet again. So he will get a glimpse and will again ruin you effect. this time they will double the money. You accept it again and get ready for another try. The whole crowd is silent. This time you are really going to take your feet off the ground. I don't know much ways to do this but you can use the best you know. I think that the Icarus Effect or the Elevator Levitation will do the work. You can use what ever you prefer. After that you will get the reactions , the reputation and the money ;p

Final Thoughts
I was thinking for a patter of this contest and at that time i got a glimpse on the Icarus effect in the archive which Exo uploaded. I searched the web and found some info about it. It was great. But something happened in my head at that time. While the Icarus effect was in my head. I saw that David Blane thread in the ExoMagic lounge. And whenever i think about the word Blane, then the first think comes in my mind is balducci levitation. Something started to happen in my head and all the levitations came together. I started thinking about the contest. And i thing this routine came to me as a miracle. Because i think i made it in less that a second (LOL, Really). The main objective of this routine is to Fail and then again Fail and at last to SHOCK the audience. Because you have failed twice and they do not expect that you will do it the third time. As the two ways i described to achieve the effect. I think that the stooge one is the best. Because in this way you are in control of everything. Nothing can go wrong. You can use a great script for the stooge that he will say. This can give more height to your performance. This routine is just a raw idea. You can make it of use in wonderful ways. Its not necessary to use only these levitations. You can try some other too like sky walker or Criss Angel Levitation.

I just thought of one thing when i read this entry. I think that the deck putting back in the pocket is not a good idea. A normal person would put the deck on the table or somewhere in sight. If you put the deck in your pocket and take it out, MAY BE after the effect someone can have a doubt that you have an extra deck. Or may be its just me. (No Offense)

I thought this as well. For a while, I did the effect using a deck switch for this part. But then after testing it more and more, and keeping the presentation building up and up, I noticed that nobody even notices simply because no laymen can even fathom the thought of an invisible deck. I havent been called out once on this yet, and if you keep the presentation at a really high level, you wont have to worry about it. But thanks for your comments though!
